How do I know if I have a problem?
If you are struggling with addiction and alcoholism, you may experience:

Needing to use or drink regularly - At first you may have just used and drank socially or on occasion, but eventually it became a habit. This doesn't mean that to struggle with drugs or alcohol you have to be using every day or drinking first thing in the morning. Often substance abuse can look like regular binge drinking or using too much on the weekends.

Cravings and intense urges to use - Obsessive thinking about drugs or alcohol and intense urges to use are common symptoms of substance abuse. You may think about that next drink or fix all day, feeling a powerful desire to pick up or head to the pub after work.

Needing to take more of the drug to get the same effects - Tolerance is something that builds over time with habitual drinking and drug taking. You may notice that it takes more alcohol or drugs to feel the same effects.

Loss of control and inability to stop - You say you will just have a few, but once you start you feel like you can't stop and end up having much more. You may want to stop drinking or using altogether, but no matter how hard you try to will yourself to stop, you feel like it is impossible. Somehow you end up drinking or using, even when it no longer feelings good.

Withdrawal symptoms - Alcohol and many other drugs can cause physical and psychological withdrawals. These can feel like nausea, headaches, sweating, irritability, anxiety, drops in mood, and physical pain.

Persistent use despite adverse consequences - You may be having problems in your relationships, trouble at work, or gotten a DUI. The drinking and using may have stopped working and feeling good, yet you keep needing the next drink or drug. You may feel like you are spiralling downward and can't find a way out.
